I've been invited to a potluck where each person will brink a different dish from a European country. I was asked to do the Czech Republic, as I lived there. But sadly I never cooked there
Can someone suggest a nice dish that I can look up a recipe for that will be suitable for a party of upscale foodie-types? My own searches are not turning much up. Many thanks! |

I've always liked kolache, a type of pastry. My mother (who was from Vienna, where the cuisine is a blend of German, Hungarian, Czech, and Jewish) used to make them with either apricot or poppy seed filling. I found a good simple recipe here: http://www.angelfire.com/tx5/texasczech/kolaches/Kolache%20recipe.htm

I second the kolache. They are not too difficult to make even if you're not a pro-baker, and they are delicious. If you need to make something savory, you can find versions with ham or cheese.

I am czech!! I love smazeny syr and knedliky with svickova sauce. Also ovocny knedliky are good, especially with blueberries or strawberries. There are a lot of dishes that use houby (mushrooms) too. Including soup and sauce for pasta.

pork, sauer cabbage and dumplings.
or replace the pork with fried duck or goose. /in case of poultry, use the red sauer cabbage rather than the white one /it looks better/. off the sweet dishes, i support the kolace, too - round shaped "cakes" with the various filling - with poppy, with uqark, or with marmelade. serve Czech beer -either Czechwar /if you're living in the US/, Budwar budweiser, or Pilsner. |
